What Does the Club Do?

The Club is dedicated to promoting the breed and creating interest in it. As such all members get a quarterly newsletter packed with interesting articles, features and news. It also carries free advertisements for members. Members exhibiting at shows in the UK are automatically covered for public liability insurance up to £2m*.

We help to promote breeders’ pigs through the Breeders’ Directory and the Register of Pigs for Sale – a service that is free to members here on the website.

We reinforce that by advertising and promoting the breed through PR in farming and countryside magazines and journals.

Because agricultural shows are an important shop window to help to promote the breed, we encourage members to compete by offering special prizes as follows.

Breed Champion Rosette at 36 shows

British Saddleback Breeders’ Club Pig of the Year Competition – a points-based contest where the pig accruing most points during a single show season wins a handsome trophy, a rosette and a sash. The runner-up wins a special rosette.

British Saddleback Breeders’ Club Champion of Champions Competition. The Breed champions from 12 leading shows are all awarded special qualifier rosettes as do the runners-up. Each champion may then compete in the final at Hatfield Show (in August each year) where the Champion of Champions will be judged. Should any of the Champions have already qualified, the Reserve Champion from that event will be deemed the qualifier. The Champion of Champions receives a silver challenge trophy for the year, a bronze medal to keep and a special rosette and sash. The runner-up receives a bronze medal and rosette.

British Saddleback Breeders' Club Breeding Female Championships
The winners of the classes for Sow and July Gilt, (and separate September Gilt classes when scheduled), are awarded qualifying rosettes at 15 leading shows. Where the class winner has already qualified, the next eligible pig in that class shall be awarded the rosette. All qualifier pigs can attend the finals at the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate in July, (providing they are also entered in the GYS classes), and compete for the Jim Appleton Memorial Cup presented by Jim's family and a special sash and rosette presented by the Club. The Reserve Champion wins a special rosette.

Photographs from previous Champion of Champions and Breeding Female Championships competitions are kept here.

The Club promotes the breed with information stands and leaflets at different shows.
