To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the British Saddleback pig it is being proposed to start a herd competition.
We want as many keepers of pedigree British Saddlebacks to enter as possible.

There are several advantages to holding this event:-

    • It will be a historic way to mark fifty years.
    • Saddleback pig keepers who do not show will have recognition for their input to the breed.
    • Keepers will benefit from contact with experienced judges, hopefully there should be a two way transfer of ideas.
    • The committee and breed reps will get a real overview of the strength and quality of pigs in the country, bloodlines and where lines can be
spread around the country for conservation.
    • The BSBC (British Saddleback Breeders Club) wants to encourage members to actively partake in club activities, and thus gain more benefits from being a member.

This will be the first year of running a competition like this so it will be trial and error, but we have to start somewhere.
Criteria for entry will be that you keep Pedigree British Saddleback Pigs. In this 50th year the competition will also be open to non-members of the BSBC, but only members will be able to enter in subsequent years. This will hopefully encourage membership of the club.

There will be two categories:-

1.  Five sows and above
2.  Four sows or less.

So if you only have one sow you can join in. The small herds are the backbone of the breed.

Judging will focus on:-

1.  Health

2.  Commitment to breed standards

              3.  Improvement of the breed, marketing, publicity etc.

Points will be added for replacement selection, and if natural service or AI is used. The club is keen to keep all sire lines strong.
The country will be divided into four areas with a winner for each area.
Entries need to be in by mid July at the latest so judging can take place in August. Winners will be announced at the Champion of Champions show in September.

To help cover costs there will be an entry fee of £5.00 per keeper.
Unfortunately due to the difficulties and costs of travel for judging we have to exclude Ireland, which is very disappointing, but if enough people are interested to make it viable please contact your breed rep. Irving Carter.

This herd competition will be a very worthwhile venture so any sponsorship would be gratefully received.

Please reply to indicating if you would like to enter and giving us your name, address, email address, telephone number and how many sows you own.
